Area children?s hospitals feel bed pinch Shortage expected to worsen this spring
Dallas Business Journal - by Joyce Tsai Staff writer

With the start of asthma and respiratory illness season and a potential outbreak of H1N1 on the way, North Texas pediatric hospitals are bracing themselves for more pediatric bed shortages.

Already this month, local children?s hospitals have begun seeing a swell in demand for beds. The big pediatric hospitals in the area ? Children?s Medical Center in Dallas and Plano, Cook Children?s Medical Center in Fort Worth and Medical City Children?s Hospital in Dallas ? have patient waiting lists that range from three to 12 children per day.

?We have more patients than beds, and we are holding patients in our emergency rooms, as they wait for admission,? said Nancy Cychol, president of Cook Children?s Medical Center.

The hospital?s waiting list ranges from seven to 12 children a day. Children?s Medical Center in Dallas and Plano has a pediatric bed shortage of three to five patients per day; Medical City has five to seven patients per day on a waiting list.
